As much as it pains me to admit it, I have been practicing law for just over 20 years. The majority of that time in practice has been focused on family law. I am the perfect example of the annoying child who knew what she wanted to be since the age of four (in actuality I had narrowed the choices to either lawyer or a female version of “Tarzan” as I was convinced that having a hut in the jungle and the ability to communicate with animals would been the perfect existence).

In 2009, my business partner and I started Matkovic Allan LLP with a view of creating a firm where the focus would be on providing our clients with the necessary advice and information to make the best possible decisions for their family. We have strived to create an environment where our lawyers are encouraged to be creative, compassionate and passionate in their representation of our clients.

What I have discovered in this career is that each day I learn something new, whether it is about the law, about me or about other people. If there has been one constant, it is that people will always surprise you. Family law is unique in that unlike most other areas of law, my clients are entrusting me with the most personal details of their lives and are doing while they are going through one of the most difficult times in their life. I am humbled by this trust and do not take it for granted. I believe that it is my role to provide my clients with the best options for dealing with the issues that accompany the breakdown of their family unit. Each situation is different and each person is different, as such, the resolution that is best for each family will also be different.

I have successfully litigated issues in court throughout much of my career. At times the only option to settle a dispute is to have the matter determined by a court, however; because of my experience as a litigator, I have come to believe that this should be a last resort for most families. Even in in high conflict situations, often attempts to negotiate or mediate issues can be successful. If those attempts fail, private arbitration is also an option that will allow the parties to choose their decision maker and ensure it is someone with the necessary knowledge, experience and understanding to make the best decision possible.

In addition to representing individuals in their family law matters, I am also a trained mediator and certified arbitrator. I have been privileged to help a number of families find their own solutions to their disputes. As a mediator, I have found that when parties are able to settle matters through the
mediation process they are able to develop creative solutions that are unique to their circumstances and that would not otherwise be available if they had litigated the matter in court. In the rare case where it is necessary for someone to make a decision because a settlement is not possible, I have used my training and experience as both a litigator and as an arbitrator to find the best possible solution for the family that is before me.

If you are interested in speaking to me about your specific family law issue, please do not hesitate to contact me.
