Carolyn M. Allan

Carolyn was born and raised in Calgary. She was called to the Alberta Bar in 2004 after graduating from the University of Calgary Law School and has always practised exclusively in the area of family law.

Law was not the first career choice for Carolyn.  She was an accomplished music teacher and performer prior to tackling the challenges of a legal career.  Carolyn was an active volunteer in the public school system when her three children were young, and was a strong advocate for the importance of music and second languages in the education curriculum.

As her children grew older, Carolyn started looking for something to challenge her that would give her the opportunity to really work with people. Carolyn has always considered herself a ‘problem solver’, and wanted to put those skills to use in a career suited for her.  Carolyn focused her education pursuits in the areas of law that would directly apply to a career as a family law lawyer.    Before Matkovic Allan LLP, Carolyn articled with a sole practitioner of family law, and then moved to a medium sized ‘Family Law Boutique’ firm where she honed her legal skills.

The focus on Carolyn’s practise is children, and what is in their best interests.  It has always been her goal, on every file involving children, to assist her clients in looking past the bitterness that may exist between them and their ex-partner, and to focus them on what is undoubtedly the parent’s mutual love for their children.  This can certainly be challenging at times, but Carolyn takes pride in her ability to provide insight to her clients, and to guide them to resolutions that ensure happy and healthy children.

On files without parenting matters, Carolyn believes that her directive approach to problem solving is appreciated by her clients.

Carolyn is a litigator at heart, and has experience in all levels of Court in Alberta.  That being said, Carolyn is a firm believer that family law matters should not be decided by a Court, and that parties should work diligently at trying to resolve their matters outside of a courtroom through the many alternative dispute resolution methods available.

Carolyn is a member of the Calgary Family Bar, and Association of Family and Conciliation Courts, and is available to mediate parenting matters.

Carolyn enjoys any time she can spend with her husband and adult children, most especially travelling as a family.
